Some are designed for the purpose of research, some for research and teaching, and others to provide services to UH Manoa students, faculty, or staff, or the surrounding community. The Center on Aging (COA) was established in July 1988 to stimulate and coordinate gerontological and aging instruction, research, and community service on the Manoa campus and to promote collaboration between the University and other organizations concerned with aging. The gerontology program draws together faculty and students from a variety of academic areas. The center coordinates two certificate programs (undergraduate and advanced) and supports the development of new courses. For information on the certificate programs see the "School of Public Health" section of this Catalog. The center conducts interdisciplinary research (with a special interest in cross-cultural studies) and provides research-related assistance to faculty and students conducting their own studies in aging. The center also assists community organizations and individuals in training, research, or evaluation projects.

The Institute for Astronomy (IFA) conducts research in astronomy and astrophysics and assists in graduate training. It operates observatories on Haleakala, Maui, for solar, satellite, and lunar ranging studies. The institute also conducts planetary, stellar, extragalactic, and infrared studies on Mauna Kea on the Big Island, using telescopes operated by the University of Hawai'i and by Canada, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and other countries. University of Hawai'i astronomers are allowed observing time on all telescopes.
