Arts and Sciences Program Requirements

BA Degree

Students must complete the UHM General Education requirements (see the “Undergraduate General Education Core and Graduation Requirements” section of this Catalog for information, p. 70). As part of the College Program requirements, all BA, BFA, and BMus degree candidates must fulfill one of the following Symbolic Reasoning courses: BUS 250, ECON 301, ICS 141, ICS 241, MATH 100, MATH 111, MATH 140*, MATH 203*, MATH 215*, MATH 241*, NREM 203, PHIL 110, or PHIL 111.

* Math Department's Precalculus Assessment required.

All BA degree candidates are required to complete one of the following two options: (1) Breadth or (2) Depth.

Option 1: Breadth

In addition to the credits completed to satisfy the General Education Foundations, Diversification, and Hawaiian/Second Language requirements, students must complete 12 additional credits, 3 credits from each of the following Colleges: (1) Arts and Humanities (AH); (2) Languages, Linguistics, and Literature (LLL); (3) Natural Sciences (NS); (4) Social Sciences (SS) (see table below). Any course at any level for which the student has prerequisites or permission can be used to fulfill the BA program requirements in the Breadth Option. Breadth requirements must be fulfilled with a grade of D (not D-) or higher.

You may not use any of the 12 credits to fulfill your General Education Foundations, Diversification, or Hawaiian/Second Language requirements. However, you may use any of the 12 credits to fulfill Focus requirements. You may count up to 3 of the 12 credits toward your major requirements. MATH 103, 104 and 135 do not satisfy the College of Natural Sciences Breadth requirement, although they will count towards the minimum 124 credits required for graduation.

All BFA degree candidates should consult the appropriate departmental adviser before registering.

BMus Degree

Students must complete the UHM General Education requirements (see the “Undergraduate General Education Core and Graduation Requirements” section of this Catalog for information, p. 70). As part of the College Program requirements, all BA, BFA, and BMus degree candidates must fulfill one of the following Symbolic Reasoning courses: BUS 250, ECON 301, ICS 141, ICS 241, MATH 100, MATH 100A MATH 111, MATH 140*, MATH 203*, MATH 215*, MATH 215A, MATH 241*, MATH 241A, MATH 251A, MATH 261, NREM 203, PHIL 110, PHIL 110A, PHIL 111 or PHIL 111A.

* Math Department's Precalculus Assessment required. For students concentrating in voice, completion of first-level study of two languages may be substituted for completion of second-level study of a single language with prior approval of the department chair.

All BMus degree candidates should consult the appropriate departmental adviser before registering.

BS Degree

Students must complete the UHM General Education Core (see the “Undergraduate General Education Core and Graduation Requirements” section of this Catalog for information, p. 70).

All BS candidates are required to complete the following science courses—either as part of the program or major requirements: CHEM 161/161L and 162/162L or 171/171L or 181A/181L; any Math department Calculus I and II courses; and PHYS 170/170L and 272/272L, or PHYS 151/151L and 152/152L. Introductory mathematics courses and CHEM 161 have assessment tests. Dates and times of assessment tests appear in each semester Schedule of Classes/MyUH Portal.

It is recommended that all entering students who have had high school courses in mathematics through pre-calculus take the following courses during their freshman year: CHEM 161/161L or CHEM 171/171L, any Math department Calculus I and II courses, and perhaps PHYS 151/151L or PHYS 170/170L. It also is recommended that students who do not have a high school course equivalent to pre-calculus should take MATH 140 at UH during the summer session prior to their first semester.

All BS degree candidates should consult the appropriate departmental adviser before registering.
