Comprehensive Portfolio Review Requirements

Each student must submit a comprehensive portfolio to the faculty for evaluation and approval before they can continue in the program to upper level design studios, ARCH 401 and 402. Eligibility requirements for the comprehensive portfolio submittal include good academic standing and successful completion of the following courses: ARCH 100, 101, 102, 121, 122 or ART 113, 201, 202, 211, 235/235L, 6 credit hours of architectural history (271, 272 or 371), 301, 302, 331 or 334, ENG 100, MATH 140, HIST 151 and 152, SP 251, PHYS 151 and 152 and one lab.

The portfolio should include design studio projects; a one-page essay making case for program advancement; at least an additional example of written work; any meritorious work from any college-level class; and any additional evidence of creative extracurricular work and/or service the student deems appropriate. A faculty review will be conducted upon completion of ARCH 302 to determine eligibility for advancement. The portfolio will be evaluated in a holistic manner within the following broad areas: quality of design, technical competence, and communication skill.

If the portfolio is approved, the student may advance to ARCH 401. If the portfolio is determined to be marginal, the faculty will require additional course work before resubmittal of the portfolio. If the portfolio is unacceptable, the student will be advised to seek another major.

Other Requirements

One 3-credit writing elective may be chosen from any non-architecture writing-intensive course or a 300-level English course
ART 113 may be taken in lieu of ARCH 122
An approved information and computer science course may be taken in lieu of ARCH 235
ARCH 241 may be taken to satisfy the social sciences core requirement
ARCH 231 may be taken to satisfy the biological sciences core requirement

Waiver or substitution of any required course must be approved by the dean or associate dean.

English as a second language (ESL) course work does not satisfy or substitute for the English requirements previously noted.

Students who have not completed course work equivalent to the introductory core and major course work will be accepted conditionally and categorized as conditional majors by the School of Architecture. To continue in the architecture program, students in this category must have satisfactorily completed all introductory core and major course work prior to the beginning of their third semester in the program. Students who fulfill these requirements will be categorized as architecture majors in good standing and permitted to continue in the program. Students who fail to satisfy these requirements will remain as conditional majors, will not be permitted to enroll in architecture classes that are restricted to architecture majors, and may be required to transfer from the architecture program. Students in this situation may reapply for admission but will only be considered for readmission following satisfactory completion of the required introductory core and major course work.

The school has adopted academic standards that are more restrictive than the general University standards. Architecture students with cumulative grade point averages (GPA) of less than 2.5 in architecture courses will be placed on probation. If the architecture GPA is not raised to 2.5 upon completion of the probationary semester, or if special conditions that may have been established by the dean or associate dean at the start of that semester are not met, students may be suspended or dismissed from the architecture program. Students who fail to achieve a minimum acceptable grade after repeating any required course can be dismissed from the architecture program.

The School of Architecture strictly enforces the UH Manoa’s withdrawal deadline. The school considers an academic record with several withdrawals to be unsatisfactory.

Transfer Credits

The academic records of successful applicants to the School of Architecture will be reviewed and transfer credit granted as appropriate. Architecture course requirements will be waived only for transfer credits that are deemed equivalent to courses offered by the University. Students may, on occasion, be granted exemption from taking certain Manoa campus courses based on previous experience or studies, but this exemption may not always result in the granting of transfer credits.

The School of Architecture does not formally review in detail applicants’ academic records with regard to granting exemptions or transfer credits prior to acceptance into the school.
