AMST 202 Diversity in American Life (3) Variety and diversity in American life; creation of a multicultural, multiracial society; distinctive outlooks shaped by ethnicity, gender, race, age, and other factors. AH2

AMST 211 Contemporary American Issues: Domestic (3) Exploration of current issues such as discrimination, jobs, family life, criminal justice, economic trends, health care, environ-mental protection, and national security. SS

AMST 314 The Immigrant in America (3) Immigration from Colonial period to present; English, Irish, Jews, Asians. Uniqueness, similarity of immigrant experience.

AMST 318 Ethnic Diversity: Asian Americans (3) Surveys five Asian American ethnic groups--their experiences, challenges, responses, contributions. Explores related topics such as race, ethnicity, gender, “model minority,” activism, their literature. AMST 322 Asian Architecture & Culture (3) Study of cultural influences affecting the architectural expression of selected Asian countries. AMST 418 Hawai‘i’s Multiculturalism (3) A multidisciplinary examination of the dynamics of the Hawaiian Islands’ racial and cultural diversity from the perspectives of historical trends, social processes, and contemporary political, social, and economic issues as they impact interracial relations.

AMST 419 Community, Culture & Change (3) As a complement to AMST 418, the course objective is to learn about Hawai‘i’s multi-racial and multicultural diversity firsthand through various field study projects. Pre: 418 (or concurrent) or consent.
