Courses: Interdisciplinary Studies
Interdisciplinary Studies (IS)

IS 101A Ways of Knowing (3) Examines scholarly discourse in the information and technology age. Introduces the nature of investigation and presentation in an academic environment. Practice in research and information technologies to think critically and analytically about education and community issues. A-F only.

IS 291 Community Service Practicum (V) Supervised fieldwork in community agency, arranged by student. Repeatable once. Pre: written proposal approved by Honors director and appropriate faculty adviser.

IS 300 Field Study (V) Pre-arranged systematic field investigation of selected topics. Pre: written proposal approved by Honors director and appropriate faculty adviser.

IS 311 Independent Study Tutorial (V) Comprises a full-semester load. Not open to freshmen or students on probation. Pre: acceptable proposal and consent of Honors director and appropriate faculty adviser.

IS 312 Independent Study Tutorial (V) Continuation of 311.

IS 369 British Life and Culture (3)

IS 386 Perspectives on Nuclear War (3) Survey, from the perspectives of several disciplines, of the nature and effects of nuclear weapons; policies governing them; possible alternatives. Pre: one core course in social or natural sciences.

IS 489 Environmental Practicum (3) Field experience in study and abatement of environmental problems under faculty direction. Project proposal, narrative activity log, and documentary report are required. Pre: upper division standing, courses in appropriate discipline, and consent.

IS 600 Business/Public Organizations (3) Critical review of literature in theory and practice. For students in business, educational and public health administration, political science, social work, etc. (Cross-listed as EDEA 600)

IS 610 Field Study in Gerontology (V) Individually designed field experience for advanced certificate in gerontology students. Placements arranged at community programs, research sites, and special projects at the Center on Aging. Repeatable.

IS 611 Interdisciplinary Seminar in Gerontology (3) Understanding of gerontology as an interdisciplinary field of study and application of such understanding to both theoretical and applied aspects of aging. Repeatable.
