A Message From the President

Indexed 8 bits

Welcome to the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Whether you are a prospective, first-time or continuing student, you will find that our campus, located in a major urban center at the heart of the Pacific, offers enormous and unique opportunities for academic, social, and personal growth.

Most of our academic programs and student support services are housed on a 320-acre campus in Manoa valley in the city of Honolulu. However, our research and academic programs and facilities are located throughout the Hawaiian islands and extend into Asia and the Pacific. We enjoy unparalleled access to internationally renowned observatories on some of the world’s highest mountains. Marine research facilities on a University-owned island plus research vessels and deep-water submersibles allow our faculty and students to explore the breadth and depths of our ocean. An Asian and Pacific focus in our nationally and internationally recognized programs in law, business, languages, theater, and ethnomusicology capitalize on our unique geographical location and cultural diversity. Other programs that capitalize on these strengths include tropical medicine, tropical agriculture, and ecology, evolution and conservation biology.

Such unique academic opportunities and multicultural experiences will prepare you exceptionally well for the global realities of the new millennium. We strive for and are proud of diversity on our campus. This is reflected in the makeup of our student body; in our University motto, Maluna a‘e o na lahui a pau ke ola ke kanaka ("Above all nations is humanity"), and in the performances and exhibitions available in our theaters and art galleries.

This Catalog provides a glimpse of what our campus has to offer. I encourage you to take full advantage of the range of programs and student services available to you at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Our talented faculty and staff are committed to helping you make the most of your college years here.
