General Information
Public health education prepares professionals in techniques of health preservation and disease prevention and control. Since many factors influence the health and well-being of population groups, public health professionals must face challenges that integrate the broad social, political, and economic issues of the local community, the nation, and the world.
Public health draws on a variety of disciplines to deal with health problems and educates professionals to serve in careers as diverse as research, management, public health practice, and teaching. Degrees offered include the professional degrees of master of public health (MPH) and doctor of public health (DrPH) and the academic degrees of master of science (MS) and PhD in biomedical sciences
(biostatistics/epidemiology).
The resources of the school include faculty, students, alumni, and institutional relationships. The faculty is a balanced mix of professionals with diverse interests and skills, many of whom have had substantial international experience. The multicultural student body includes experienced health professionals from the United States and other countries. The school's many alumni offer professional links with field placement agencies and potential job sites, and they participate with students and faculty in school activities.
Strong cooperative relationships in teaching, research, and student field supervision exist with community agencies, the state Department of Health, federal agencies such as the Public Health Service, and other areas of the University of Hawai'i.
Cooperative relationships are equally important to the school in the international arena. They provide unique research and educational experiences for faculty and students. Initiatives in the Pacific region have resulted in the designation of the school as the Secretariat for the Pacific Island Health Officers Association. The Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health expands upon the school's long-standing linkages with a number of Asian schools and offers opportunities for faculty and student exchange, collaborative service projects, and joint research activities. Asia-Pacific consortium members include, in addition to the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, institutions in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, People's Republic of China, Sri Lanka, Korea, Japan, Republic of China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Australia, and Lao
PDR.
