Auman, PhD—multimedia reporting, editing, media ethics, publication design, race, ethnicity, gender and media Degree Offered: BA in journalism The Academic ProgramJournalism (JOUR) education develops students' critical thinking skills and ability to gather, analyze, and organize information and to communicate it clearly, effectively, and responsibly using multiple media platforms such as print, broadcast, online, and other new media. Journalism education embraces the social, cultural, and historic contexts of reporting on public and social institutions as well as on individuals and groups. It stresses the importance of a free, vigorous and responsible press to the maintenance of an informed citizenry in order to exercise the rights of self-governance in a democracy. The journalism degree program is professional in its orientation. Admission to the major requires sophomore standing with a minimum 2.5 GPA after completion of JOUR 250 with a B or better. Majors should follow the recommended course sequencing. All students wishing to enroll in JOUR 250 and above must have earned a C or better in ENG 100. All students must take either ICS 101 or 110 or 111 before enrolling in JOUR 401 or 402. Students are encouraged to work for campus media such as Ka Leo O Hawai'i or KTUH-FM news and to participate in an extensive program of professional internships and the UH Manoa chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
